The Effects of Menopause
Over 50 million women in the United States are currently
peri-menopausal or have experienced menopause. Menopause
occurs when a women ceases to menstruate, due to the decrease
in estrogen and progesterone produced by the ovaries.
Menopause is the end of the reproductive years for a woman and
has a direct effect on the pelvic health when estrogen levels
drop. Symptoms menopausal women experience
include:
-irregular or lack of periods
-night sweats and/or insomnia
-hot flashes
-less frequent/intense orgasms
-urinary frequency
-incontinence
-decreased sex drive/arousal
-mood swings
-vaginal dryness/soreness/itching
-headaches
-frequent urinary infections
Menopause and Incontinence
During menopause, a decrease in estrogen may cause dryness and
weakness in the walls of the urethra preventing a tight seal
from forming, which is critical for bladder control.
Studies have shown that 56% of menopausal women experience
bladder control problems.
Menopause and Vaginal Dryness
The lack of estrogen during menopause also influences
the blood flow to the pelvic area affecting the health of the
tissues. Vaginal muscles and tissue may become thinner,
as well as lose their elasticity, moisture, and tension.
Glands produce less moisture ant there is a decrease in
production of lubricating fluids. Many women complain of
vagnial dryness and irritation during and after menopause.
Menopause and Prolapse
The reduction in hormones can also contribute to
pelvic organ relaxation, also known as prolapse. Weakened
pelvic floor muscles and less robust tissue can result in the
bladder, uterus, and bowel sagging into the vaginal cavity.
Myself is Part of the Menopause Solution
Pelvic floor muscle exercises can help the above
symptoms. These exercises improve blood flow to the genital
area, increasing lubrication, which improves the health of the
tissues lining the vagina, as well as the muscles supporting
the bladder. This increase in lubrication may prevent
pain during intercourse (Dysparenia), which is often attributed
to vaginal dryness. Women may also experience an increase in
vaginal sensation and arousal.
In addition to improved blood circulation and lubrication,
pelvic muscle exercises also tone and strengthen the muscles
responsible for supporting the pelvic organs (urethra, vagina,
and rectum), and as a result reduce the risk of prolapse, as
well as incontinence. Benefits of pelvic muscles
exercises:
-improved blood flow to genital area
-prevention of prolapse
-enhanced sexual pleasure, sensation and lubrication
-better bladder control
-increased vaginal tone
